  1. HP-UX SNAplusLink, Technical Data
  2.    For HP 9000 Series 700 and 800 Computer Systems
  3. Product Numbers J2226A, J2220A
  4.    HP-UX SNAplusLink provides communications between an HP 9000
  5. Series 700 or 800 and an IBM mainframe or an IBM peer system such as the
  6. AS/400.  The SNAplusLink manages the SDLC, QLLC and Token Ring line to
  7. the host and emulates the major features of an IBM 3274 cluster control
  8. unit using the lower four layers of SNA.  Node Type 2.0 (T2.0) for
  9. hierarchical connectivity and Node Type 2.1 (T2.1) for peer-to-peer
  10. connectivity are supported.  Logical Unit Types 0, 1, 2, 3, and 6.2
  11. (LU0, LU1, LU2, LU3, LU 6.2) are supported.

  15. The HP-UX SNAplusLink can be configured as either stand-alone or as a
  16. client/server.  The stand-alone environment provides access to IBM
  17. mainframes or IBM peer systems for a single HP-UX computer which has its
  18. own HP-UX SNAplusLink.  Running in the client/server environment permits
  19. access to the IBM systems from multiple HP-UX computers on either an
  20. Ethernet or Token Ring LAN.  These computers generally use a single
  21. HP 9000 computer with a SNAplusLink as a gateway to the IBM system.
  22.    The HP-UX SNAplusLink product is used in conjunction with a service
  23. product (HP-UX SNAplus3270, SNAplusAPI, SNAplusRJE, or SNAplus3179G.
  24. Please refer to the appropriate data sheets for more information.)  A
  25. copy of a service product must reside on each HP-UX computer which is to
  26. communicate with the IBM system through the server system.

  28. Features
  29. o SNAplusLink allows the HP 9000 to emulate the major features of a 3174
  30.   and 3274 cluster controller using SNA protocols.
  31. o SNAplusLink supports a maximum of 254 Logical Session Units (LUs) as
  32.   terminals and printers concurrently per link card with a maximum of
  33.   2,000 LUs per system.
  34. o Supports PU 2.1 primary to initiate connections with peer systems
  35.   including other HP 9000s.
  36. o The HP-UX SNAplusLink running on the HP 9000 Series 700 and 800
  37.   systems acts as a server for SNAplus clients running SNAplus3270,
  38.   SNAplusAPI, SNAplusRJE, and SNAplus3179G on an HP 9000 Series 300,
  39.   400, 700, and 800 and can communicate simultaneously to the mainframe
  40.   using any or all of these services.
  41. o An HP 9000 Series 700, or 800 with HP-UX SNAplusLink can function as a
  42.   non-dedicated gateway.  Depending on the customer's specific
  43.   application requirements, SNAplusLink easily operates on a Series 700
  44.   or 800 while running other HP-UX applications.
  45. o BSD Sockets is the defacto industry standard interface used between
  46.   the SNAplusLink and the SNAplus service products in a client/server
  47.   environment.
  48. o SNA and TCP/IP can run concurrently over the same Token Ring card.
  49. o SNA and OSI can run concurrently over the same X.25 link card.
  50. o The SNAplusLink product supports line speeds up to 64 Kbps over
  51.   switched or leased lines for SDLC or QLLC connections, and 4Mb and
  52.   16Mb for Token Ring connections.

  54. Functional Specifications
  55. o All printers and terminals supported by the HP 9000 Series 700 or 800
  56.   running HP-UX are supported by HP-UX SNAplusLink.
  57. o SNAplusLink allows communication with an IBM 370 or compatible
  58.   mainframe running VM, VM/XA, MVS/SP, MVS/XA, MVS/ESA, or DOS/VSE
  59.   operating systems and ACF/VTAM through an IBM 3705, 3725 or 3745
  60.   communications controller running ACF/NCP.  SNAplusLink also allows
  61.   comunication with IBM midrange systems such as the AS/400, S/36 or
  62.   S/38 as peers.
  63. o Up to ten SDLC link cards may be supported in a single Series 700 or
  64.   800 depending on the number of card slots available.  This allows
  65.   links to multiple IBM systems.
  66. o Up to five Token Ring cards may be supported in a single Series 700 or
  67.   800 depending on the number of card slots available.
  68. o NetView alarms and alerts are sent to the NetView console.
  69. o The SNAplusLink supports synchronous modem speeds up to 64Kbps as
  70.   described below.  SNAplusLink requires synchronous modems that support
  71.   the following handshake signals:  DTR, DSR, RTS, CTS, CD, RI.  Modems
  72.   must also provide transmit and receive clocks for the SDLC interface
  73.   and ensure ground isolation between the communication systems.  The
  74.   following modems are supported for HP-UX SNAplusLink:

  129. Customer Installation Responsibility
  130. Installation of these products requires knowledge in several overlapping
  131. areas.  The staff engineer responsible for this task must have strong
  132. knowledge of (or have direct contact with staff with strong knowledge
  133. of):  hardware configuration and HP-UX system administration.
  134.    Installation requires basic SNA knowledge.  This includes knowledge
  135. of interface nodes, network routers, NAUs, PUs, LUs, link types, IBM
  136. hardware and software.
  137.    Installation of SNAplus requires a thorough user-level knowledge of
  138. HP-UX commands.  In addition, the installer must be familiar with:
  139.   - running update on an HP-UX system
  140.   - running SAM (in order to add users)
  141.   - the HP-UX file system, privilege groups, and real-time features
  142.   - running LAN and PSI diagnostics on an HP-UX system
  143.   - HP-UX kernel configuration
  144.    The installer must be familiar with HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and
  145. 800 systems, be able to install interface cards, shut down and restart
  146. the system and have the ability to configure a modem for QLLC and SDLC,
  147. and perform token ring link setup.  The installer should also know
  148. peripheral hardware capabilities.
  149.    Hardware configuration also includes an understanding of
  150. client/server topologies, and what products will be on the client or the
  151. server.
  152.    Customers who cannot compose a team with this skill set should
  153. purchase HP Installation and Network Startup services.
  154.  
  155. Additional Implementation Assistance
  156. For implementation needs that go beyond installation, the customer can
  157. either provide self-support, or can purchase additional services from
  158. HP.  These services include Network Startup and HP ConsultLine.  In
  159. addition, the customer can also purchase service from HP on a
  160. time-and-materials basis.
  161.    Network Startup includes implementation scheduling and coordination
  162. assistance, network configuration and verification testing, and network
  163. documentation.

  166. HP-UX SNAplusLink includes right-to-use license, software, and hardware.
  167. For Series 700, customer may specify software version option, media
  168. option, hardware option, and for the Series 800, a processor option.
  169.    HP-UX SNAplusLink requires HP STREAMS/UX for Series 700 and 800
  170. running HP-UX 9.0.
